Prophet Yusuf

يوسف

Surah Yusuf (Chapter 12)

Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), son of Ya'qub (Jacob), is one of the most beloved prophets in all of Islam. His story is told in rich detail in Surah Yusuf — Chapter 12 of the Holy Quran — the only chapter dedicated entirely to the life of a single prophet. Allah Himself called it "the best of stories" (Quran 12:3), and for good reason: it is a story of extraordinary beauty, patience, heartbreak, and ultimate triumph.

Yusuf was gifted from a young age with the ability to interpret dreams — a gift that would shape his entire life. As a boy, he dreamed that the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him, and his father Ya'qub recognised it as a sign of prophethood. But Yusuf's special qualities stirred jealousy in his older brothers, who plotted against him. They threw him into a well and told their father he had been eaten by a wolf.

Yet Allah had a plan. Yusuf was discovered by a travelling caravan and taken to Egypt, where he was sold into the household of a noble man. He grew into a young man of great beauty, deep faith, and unshakeable integrity. When he was wrongfully imprisoned — punished for doing the right thing — he never lost his trust in Allah. In prison, he used his gift to interpret the dreams of his fellow inmates.

Years passed. When the king of Egypt had a mysterious dream that no one could explain, Yusuf was finally brought forward. He interpreted it correctly: seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. The king was so impressed that he appointed Yusuf as the governor of Egypt's grain stores. Through wisdom and foresight, Yusuf saved Egypt — and surrounding lands — from starvation.

In a moment of beautiful divine poetry, the brothers who had wronged Yusuf came to Egypt seeking food, not knowing he was their long-lost brother. Yusuf revealed himself — and instead of anger or revenge, he responded with complete forgiveness. He was reunited with his father Ya'qub after decades of separation, fulfilling his childhood dream.

The story of Prophet Yusuf teaches children that true strength lies in patience and forgiveness, that hardship is never the end of the story, and that Allah's plan — even when it is hidden — is always perfect and beautiful.
